The Cella Trichora in English:
The ruins of Cella Trichora in Óbuda are located in the inner part of the present-day district at the intersection of Raktár Street and Hunor Street. Cella Trichora was situated in the former outskirts of Aquincum, where it was likely a cemetery when it was originally built.
The excavation of the building began in 1930 after the ruins were disturbed during fieldwork in 1927. According to the original plans, the excavation was supposed to take place at the intersection of Hunor Street and Raktár Street. Four excavation areas were initially designated for this purpose, but eventually, only the first area was excavated due to the large quantity of Roman artifacts found. Within this area, the ruins of Cella Trichora were discovered, as well as additional walls surrounding it. Five cultural layers and seven building periods were identified in the excavated ruins. It was determined that the area had been inhabited from the 2nd century AD until the end of the 4th century AD.
The walls from the first two periods are the oldest, but apart from their structural elements, not much else can be determined about them, and they date to around the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The walls from the third period form a coherent system and outline some rooms and a courtyard of a building. The walls likely continue under the streets, but archaeologists couldn’t excavate the areas beneath the roads during the dig. The dating of these walls is around AD 102-107 based on a legionary seal found on them. The walls from the fourth and fifth periods belong to the same cultural layer, but only those from the fourth period form a wall system. The walls from the sixth period are the best constructed; they were plastered and used high-quality mortar. These walls were likely built in the 4th century AD and were destroyed in the middle of that century. After the destruction, the area was leveled, and a new building was constructed on the site. This last layer represents the Cella Trichora’s last layer.
